How Many Minutes Are In A Year?

You probably know the basics about how many days are in a year, how many hours in a day, and so on, but do you know how many minutes there are in each year? Today we’re going to learn how many minutes there are in each year!

A lot of people don’t realize that there are 366 days in each year (366.25, actually). Why do we have an extra 0.25 days every year? It has to do with the way our calendar works.

How Many Minutes in a Year

It may seem like a lot to calculate how many minutes are in a year. There are 86,400 seconds in a day and 365 days in the year. So that equals 31,536,000 seconds per year. Dividing by 60 yields an answer of about 597,600 minutes for every year.

However, it’s more accurate to say there are 525,960 minutes in a year as there is not always a full 24 hours in a day. The shortest day of the year is December 22nd with only 23 hours and 25 minutes. Conversely, December 23rd has 25 hours and 48 minutes so this would be a leap day with 1 extra minute on February 29th in most years or 366 days.

With all this time added up, there are 525,960 total minutes in a year! How many minutes does a person blink in one day: On average, humans blink anywhere from 14-17 times per minute. How many times do people blink when they watch TV: According to The Wall Street Journal, TV watchers blink at a rate of 12 blinks per minute. When you’re reading this sentence, you’ll have blinked once already.

Common calendar

The current common calendar system consists of 12 months with 30 or 31 days in each month, giving a total of 365 days. The current starting date for the common calendar is January 1st. The first day of the previous year falls on December 31st, making it the last day that can be dated.

The last day of this year is December 31st which means that today is the first day of next year. On average, every single person will spend about 2 years of their life sleeping and only 2 hours reading. If you’re living an average lifespan (eighty years), then you’ll have spent almost 25% of your life asleep! Isn’t that crazy?!

You’ll also have spent more than 15 minutes of your life waiting for a red light to turn green. So if we lived our lives in 24-hour intervals instead of 12-hour intervals, what would happen? Well then one month would consist of exactly 33 days and each day would consist of 24 hours – but we’re not going to get into the math here because math is hard!

Okay, so let’s say you wanted to know how many minutes are in a year. We did the math and found out that there are 172800 minutes in a year. That’s just over 3 million seconds!

Leap Year

A leap year is an exception to this rule. Leap years only occur every four years, and at that time, February goes from having an extra day of February 29th to just a regular 28-day month. So with those exceptions in mind, there are 1,440 minutes in each year. That’s about 69 days’ worth of minutes! In conclusion, there are 1,440 minutes each year.

Now you know how many moments it takes for time to pass so quickly without you even noticing! There are so many other aspects of life where we use units of time as well. Have you ever wondered how much money there is in a jar full of pennies? Well if your jar has $1.00 worth of pennies then that equals 10,000 pennies (assuming all the pennies have been minted).

On average, people earn $30 per hour when they work 8 hours per day Monday through Friday which equals $240 per week or $960 per month. If one person works 12 months out of the year then he/she will earn $10,080 per year.

The most popular unit of measurement in finance is called dollars. One dollar consists of 100 cents and a dollar can be divided into 100 smaller units called cents. When calculating the total cost of any purchase at the store or restaurant, you should always check prices by rounding up to the nearest dollar.

Gregorian year

A Gregorian year is 365 days long, plus one day to make it 366, with no leap years. So, that means there are approximately 31,536,000 minutes in a Gregorian year. This number may seem big at first but if you divide it by 24 hours in a day (which equals 1440) then you’ll see that an average person has about 147 minutes per day. That doesn’t sound too bad, does it?

You might be asking yourself how many seconds are in a minute and how many hours are in a day. There are 60 seconds for every minute and 60 minutes for every hour. We have 24-hour days so that’s 86,400 seconds. If we subtract 1 second for leap years – which we do once every four years – then you get 86,399 because those extra 4 minutes each year don’t amount to anything significant and they’re just not worth counting.

What about the hundredths of a second? We only count up to the tenths of a second when it comes to the time on our clocks. The hundredths of a second aren’t even acknowledged anymore because people haven’t been able to accurately measure them since 1967! When you start thinking about how much time we waste on useless things like this, you can start appreciating how valuable your minutes really are.

Conclusion

Imagine that there are a total of 525,600 minutes in a year. The next thing you need to do is find out how many days are in a year and divide the number of minutes by 365.25 to get your answer. Let’s say there are 30 days in a month, the answer would be 525,600 minutes divided by 365.25 which equals 1,366.00 minutes per day or 12 hours per day. Fascinating! Now you know how many minutes are in a year.
