The U in the U1 stands for Ultra WideBand. According to Apple, this new Apple‑designed U1 chip uses Ultra-Wideband technology for spatial awareness thereby allowing the iPhone 11 Pro to understand its precise location relative to other nearby U1‑equipped Apple devices.

This is another sense is going to lead the iPhone 11 to amazing new capabilities.  Apple company is also using the U1 chip to determine the precise location of another iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro or iPhone 11 Pro Max.

Also, Apple has a bigger plan for the U1 chip. Rumors also have it that Apple will use the U1 chip in Tile-like tracking device dubbed AirTags, that’s designed to be attached to items like keys and wallets for tracking purposes allowing you to know their location right in your Find My App.

Why is Apple Tracking the U1 chip on iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone 11 Pro Max?

Apple has provided the following explanation of why they need to track the chip on your iPhone 11 series.

“Ultra-wideband technology is an industry-standard technology and is subject to international regulatory requirements that require it to be turned off in certain locations. iOS uses Location Services to help determine if the iPhone is in these prohibited locations in order to disable ultra-wideband and comply with regulations. The management of ultra-wideband compliance and its use of location data is done entirely on the device and Apple is not collecting user location data.”

It’s also important you know that Apple is only tracking your location internally on your device and they won’t share it with any third-party. So there are no issues or anything to worry about as they are not uploading it to their saver.

However, if you still wish to disable the location tracking on your iPhone 11, below is how to do that. You can use this step to disable the U1 chip ok iOS 13.3.1 and later.

Step 1: Open the Settings app on your iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro or iPhone 11 Pro Max.
Step 2: Now scroll down and tap on Privacy
Step 3: Navigate to Location Services > System Services
Step 4: Next, on the toggle next to Networking & Wireless.
Step 5: You will get a prompt, tap on Turn Off to turn off location tracking for networking and wireless features.

Remember, turning off the U1 chip will also affect Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Ultra-Wideband performance. You may also be required to keep it enable when Apple launches U1 chip-based accessories like AirTags, which will supply chain ramp-ups suggests will be launched in Q3 this year.
