Microphone Not Working on iPhone? Let see

Before you start any troubleshooting, you have to test and see if the iPhone is not working really. Remember, unlike the iPhone 7 and below, the recent iPhones such as iPhone 11/ 11 Pro, iPhone 11 Pro Max, iPhone X/XS Max, iPhone XR, iPhone 8/8Plus now comes with three microphones.

You will find one at the top, one at the rear and the third one at the bottom. To see if the front and the rear microphone is working, just record two videos using the selfies camera and check the audio.

For the bottom microphone, open the voice memo app on the iPhone and capture a voice note holding the microphone to your mouth. Now play the note and check if the audio is clear. If you find your voice fading away or not clear, then your microphone needs some attention.

How to Fix iPhone’s Microphone Not Working During Calls

Method 1: Clean it with a Toothbrush

You see those tiny dust particles sticking in your device microphone, it can be a reason for a muffled voice output on calls. So the best way to remove this dust particle is to clean them using a toothbrush or better still an air compressor.

Using air compressor required that you are extremely careful about the flow of the compressed air, keep it low otherwise it may damage the internals of your device.

Don’t make the mistake of inserting any sharp objects on your microphone as they can end up damaging it permanently. While on it, you can use the opportunity to clean and disinfect your iPhone.

Method 2: Disconnect Bluetooth Devices

I don’t really know about you but this always happens to me. I will be working with my Airpod and after I removed it from my ear I will not remember to disable the Bluetooth. So when calls come in, I will not be hearing anything.

The thing is, if your iPhone is connected to a Bluetooth device, you can not hear the caller or even make a call. So make sure you manually disconnect your Bluetooth if it’s connected to any device.

Method 3: Make Sure Nothing is Covering Your iPhone’s Mic

Some of these fancy cases we use on our device do cover the mic. If you are using all these cheap phone cases from third-party, make sure it’s not covering your iPhone mics. You should check the mic hole and make sure they are aligned properly.

Method 4: Turn off Noise Cancellation

By default, iPhone comes with Noise cancellation to reduce ambient noise on phone calls when you are holding the receiver to your ear.  This works fine and it’s a nice feature though, but it can end up muffling your voice if you are talking to someone while lying on the bed.

To disable the Noise Cancellation on your iPhone, go to Accessibility > Audio/Visual. Switch off Noise Cancellation toggle. After that, you should make a call and see if the microphone is working perfectly.

Method 5: Enable Microphone Access for Third-Party Apps

Are you having a problem with a microphone when trying to make video calls with third-party apps such as Zoom, FaceTime, Skype, or WhatsApp? No need to panic, you just have to enable the permission for the microphone for these apps.

You can do this by going to Settings app > Privacy > Microphone, and enable microphone access to the apps.

Method 6: Hard Reset Your iPhone

Yes maybe, you should give it a try. Hard resetting your iPhone will fix most minor glitches or apps crashes on your device. Doing this will not delete your files, instead, it will reboot your iPhone.

To hard reset iPhone X, XR, 11, hold the volume up, volume down and the side button simultaneously, you will see Slide to Power off button, continue holding the Side button until you see the Apple logo.

Method 7: Reset All Settings

If your iPhone microphone is still not working, then you need to follow this method. You should reset your iPhone back to factory settings. This method won’t wipe out your data or files but will delete all saved Wi-Fi passwords. To do this, go to iPhone Settings app and go to General > Reset > and choose Reset All Settings option.

Method 8: Update Your iPhone

Do you have the recent and latest iOS update on your iPhone? Let’s see. Head to the iPhone Settings > General > Software Update and download the latest version of iOS if available. Updating your iPhone to the latest iOS might be all that you need to fix your iPhone microphone not working.

iPhone microphone not working: Solved.

I believe with these methods above, you are able to fix your iPhone microphone not working. If the problem continues after you follow all the troubleshooting above, you should contact Apple support. You can also apply the same method on iPads as well.
