Alexa can do many things, including TV control. What Alexa can do will depend on the Amazon hardware or other Alexa-enabled gadgets you have.

Alexa can’t control your TV if you have an Echo speaker. A Fire TV Stick is required for all versions, but you will have the most control with a Fire TV Cube and Fire Edition TV.

The Fire TV Stick’s later generations include an Alexa remote control. This allows you to press and hold the microphone button, barking your commands at her.

These are just a few of the things that you can say.

How to make Alexa whisper when she replies

Alexa can be so helpful for setting alarms, turning off lights, and checking the weather tomorrow. If your partner is asleep or you don’t want to wake up children or babies nearby, Alexa’s loud replies can be problematic.

You could turn the volume down before asking a question. But there is a better way. Turn on Alexa whispered answers.

Although it is funny at first to hear her whisper to your face, you will soon get used to it. You won’t laugh so loud that you disturb those who need peace and quiet.

How to enable Alexa whispered responses

It’s easy: Just say, “Alexa, switch on whisper mode.” This doesn’t have to be done on all your Amazon Echos and other devices with Alexa built-in. It applies to all devices that are connected to your Alexa/Amazon account.

Alexa will only speak when you ask a question. This feature is well thought out. Alexa will only whisper when you ask a question.

However, keep in mind that she will reply at the average volume when you whisper to each device the first time you whisper it to her. She might say, “I think you just whispered” to you. “I’ll whisper back to you every time I hear you whisper.”

You can turn these whispers off by saying, “Alexa, turn on whisper mode.”

Alexa app

Another option is to allow whispered responses within the Alexa app.

Tap on Settings to open the main menu (the three lines at the top-left corner).

Scroll down until Alexa Preferences is visible. Tap Voice Responses below it. Use the toggle switch to enable Whisper Mode.

That’s all.

Alexa Brief Mode

Brief Mode is another helpful tip that ties into Whisper Mode. You have likely seen it in the Alexa app above Whisper Mode.

It reduces the time it takes to respond to requests. In some cases, it will even play a tone that indicates that the request was being fulfilled. If you say, “Alexa, turn off your bedroom light”, you will hear a brief “dong-ding” to let you know it has happened.

How to use Alexa as an intercom: Drop-In & Announcements

Drop-In is an Alexa feature that you may not have used, but it can be handy if you need to speak with friends or family members who are too far away to shout.

Announcements work similarly but are slightly different. You can broadcast a message through your home using Echos – without having to shout or stop what you are doing to inform everyone that dinner’s on the table.

How to use Drop In for Amazon Echo

Drop-In is only possible if you and the recipient(s) give permission for this feature to be used by specific contacts.

Drop-In works much like Alexa Calling, but instead of playing a tone and waiting for someone to answer, Drop-in starts the call immediately since permission has been granted.

That’s all. You can now say “Alexa, Chris Martin,” and the call will start as long as both of you have an Echo device. If you have Echo Shows or a Spot, it will be a video conference that starts with an opaque image and becomes apparent after a few seconds. This adds privacy to protect against unexpected Drop-Ins.

Amazon recently added the ability for Echo devices to drop in on your home. This allows you to have a group chat. Simply say, “Alexa, drop by on all of my devices.”

You can stop the call by saying, “Alexa, end drop out.”

TIP: To stop someone from calling you, say, “Alexa, do not disturb.” This will be done on every Echo that you have. You must disable Do Not Disturb to prevent others from dropping in on you.

How to make announcements using Alexa

This is even easier. This is even easier.

Simply say, “Alexa, announce [your text message]” There is no need to pause between announcing and your message. Alexa will ask you, “What’s the announcement?” so you can respond with the message.

Alexa will record your voice and not speak in her own words. To send a message to Alexa in her voice, use the messaging feature in Alexa and enter the message and send it to a contact.

There is no way to announce specific Echoes: You can only Drop Into the Echo and share your message
